State Standards:
Systems in Living Things
Standard #6:Identify the general functions of the major systems of the human body (digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, protection from disease, and movement, control, and coordination) and describe ways that these systems interact with each other.

Major Learning Targets:
  • I can describe the functions of the major body systems
  • I can explain how the different systems interact
  • I can recognize some major organs from each system
  • I can explain how to apply this information to their own health

Important Concepts:
  • Each system has a critical job to perform for the organism
  • Each system much function well for the organism to be healthy
  • The systems do not act alone, instead they are all connected and rely on each other
  • Our actions and choices have long term health consequences

Important Skills:
  • Students will learn to use the tools of dissection appropriately and responsibly
  • Students will critically examine the impact of choices on health
  • Students will use evidence to form opinions and create solutions to current health problems in the United States

Assessments and Projects in Addition to Weekly Test:
  • Put your muscles to the test activity and report
  • Heart Dissection Lab and report
  • Chicken Bones and Osteoporosis Lab and report
  • Research the Brain’s role in food addiction and analyze your own experience with the substances that trigger this reaction
  • Research the effects of salt, sugar, and fats, on the human body systems and come up with ways people can learn moderation in the consumption of these
  • COPD- Demonstrations and follow up questions about how smoking affects the respiratory system __http://www.idahofamilyphysicians.org/Tar%20Wars/9.%20Additional%20Activities%20&%20Demos.pdf__
