State Standards: Structure and Function of Cells Standard #4:Recognize that within cells, many of the basic functions of organisms (e.g., extracting energy from food and getting rid of waste) are carried out. The way in which cells function is similar in all living organisms.
Major Learning Targets: -I can explain how materials are transported into and out of a cell - I can explain how a cell uses energy and the waste products it produces -I can explain how autotrophs produce food and the waste products of that process -I can explain and illustrate how photosynthesis and respiration are parts of a continuous cycle - Students will be able to describe cell division
Important Concepts:
The cell must transport materials into and out of itself through the membrane and it must be selective of what can enter and exit
Photosynthesis is the origin of all food on earth
Respiration is how cells use the food they receive
Photosynthesis and respiration recycle the same materials over and over between organisms
Important Skills: -Students will be able to diagram and explain the photosynthesis respiration cycle - Students will be able to model osmosis and diffusion using iodine, constartch and plastic bags
Assessments and Projects in Addition to Weekly Test: Gummy Bear Osmosis Lab and report
Resources: Prentice Hall Life Science Chapter 3 Sec 2 The Cell in Its Environment pg80-85 Sec 3 Photosynthesis pg 86-90 Sec 4 Respiration pg 91-94
