State Standards:
Systems in Living Things
Standard #5: Describe the hierarchical organization of multicellular organisms from cells to tissues to organs to systems to organisms.

Major Learning Targets:
  • I can explain that cells’ appearances are different depending on their function
  • I can identify and define the different tissue types
  • I can recognize organs and understand that they come together to form organ systems
  • I can list and give examples of the levels of organization from simplest to the most complex

Important Concepts:
  • Each of the organizational levels must do it’s job properly for the health of the whole organism
  • Cells do the simplest job and the processes become more complex as the levels get higher

Important Skills:
  • Students will be able to classify examples of different tissue types based on a description of their functions
  • Students will create a visual model of the concept of body organization

Assessments and Projects in Addition to Weekly Test:
  • Create a comic story explaining how these levels come together to form a functioning unit called an organism
  • Research a topic and determine which level of organization it is about and how it affects the whole organism
